Our journey started with a simple question during Kenya's plastic ban
It was September 2017. Prof Judy Wakhungu, the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, was spearheading the ban on single use plastics. The Business Daily had published an interview and the one lingering question in mind was how to package meat. Following keenly from the residential halls at JKUAT main campus, she made numerous examples and what struck a chain of thought was the mention of hyacinth.
Turning environmental challenges into opportunities
That's where the research started. The first part was knowing the current applications. This moved on to the extent of the damage caused, and various research publications on its usage. That's how our biopolymer, PHB, was born. Numerous companies in India, Eastern Europe were found to have adopted PHB. Much research tended to venture into the biochemistry and organic chemistry. Two colleagues who were doing Analytical and Industrial Chemistry joined the team. It was time to put in the work.
Building on strong educational support
The Department of Chemistry assigned us a Supervisor, and we were then able to start carrying out the qualitative research. The University community has been very supportive and instrumental as the product has morphed through the various stages and creating new products over the pipeline. We have suffered major setbacks most especially when a critical member of staff succumbed to Covid. Nonetheless, we continue to grow and our diverse team currently comprises of members from the fields of mechanical engineering, pharmaceutics, inorganic chemistry, agricultural biosystems and ICT.
Leading Africa's green revolution
We aspire to lead the continent in renewing the Earth, and ensuring the next generation has a wonderful experience. We invite you to be part of this movement, and urge you join the Bio Kraft Systems Community. By and by as our lakes get clearer, air gets fresher, land gets more fertile, food more sweeter, our bodies more stronger, may the Earth flex her beauty once again and the spirit of shared prosperity propel us to greater heights in Our Green Economy.
